    What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a healing treatment that aims to balance the energy within the body. Hair-thin, one-time-use needles are gently and shallowly inserted in strategic areas of the body. This assists in restoring balance to both the body and mind, creating an environment where the body can tap into its innate intelligence for self-regulation and, ultimately, improved health.

The acupuncture experience greatly differs from receiving an injection, as the needles used are exceptionally thin, often resulting in minimal sensation for many patients. While the experience may vary for each individual, the majority report feeling only a slight amount of sensation.

Once the needles are in place, it is common to experience a deep sense of relaxation and overall well-being that can last for several hours following the treatment.

Do I need a Doctor's referral to see a Registered Acupuncturist?

You do not need to be referred by a physician in order to make an appointment at Acupuncture Wellness. You can make an appointment independently if you have concerns about an ongoing or acute physical situation.

How long will my first appointment be?

Your first acupuncture session will take approximately 90 minutes, including an in-depth assessment of your past and present health, followed by an initial treatment. Our clients receive a comprehensive evaluation and examination in a private one-on-one treatment room. When all concerns are recognized and evaluated, a diagnosis is made, and our findings are discussed with each client before developing an individualized treatment plan that works for you and your lifestyle.

Each follow-up appointment is approximately 60 minutes.

    Does Acupuncture hurt?

If something feels like a brief electric jolt, we know we’ve found the proper acupuncture point. This can be a fairly strong feeling, but it will subside right away and is generally a good sign.

If, on the other hand, the sensation around the point feels hot, burning, or sharp, this is a sign that the needle is not sitting well—let us know, and we’ll fix it right away.

During your treatment, no sensation should keep you from resting comfortably. Don’t ever sit in pain while being treated. Let us know if something keeps you from closing your eyes and relaxing.

I got a bruise from the needle. Is that normal?
Slight bruising is the most common side effect of being treated with acupuncture needles. Bruises shouldn’t be expected after every treatment, but you may find one occasionally if a needle is placed near a larger vein. For example, the veins in your wrists are small, while those in your upper arms are slightly bigger. Since more blood flows through that area, it is more likely that a small bruise may form there.

If you notice a small bruise beginning to form when an acupuncture needle is removed, use your fingertips to apply pressure for a few moments. Later on, you can use an ice pack on the area to prevent further discoloration. It may be colourful, but a slight bruise is nothing to be concerned about. However, feel free to mention how you felt to your acupuncturist the next time you come for treatment.

How often do I come for Acupuncture?
This will vary according to your situation and what is being treated. If you are experiencing pain, acupuncture is often recommended once or twice a week, depending on the acute or chronic condition.
